FMP-Research File

Initial Research

  • Inspiration Research

Because I am choosing to do a video installation for my FMP the layout of the video will be similar to the short film- The Answers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo_nrcKUffw

you dont.jpg

Plot-Sadly, that's it. Young and lively Nathan is irreversibly dead from a hideous car crash and there's nothing he can do about it. However, after the initial shock, Nathan discovers that there's actually a lot to do when you join the departed, such as find out the answers to life's great mysteries or maybe uncover what happened to your beloved missing dog. Either way, be careful of what you ask, because you may not like the answer.

The Short Film-The Answers has inspired me in piece because the way the main character Nathan shows his emotions and how he reflects on his recent premature death He asks questions about his life in a space of nothingness as he as an individual reflects on the life that he lived. This short film has given me inspiration for my own video installation project. As I want to reflect in similar fashion of what society treats and expects men to act in today’s world. In addition, I want to show how we can overcome this issue of not being (man enough) or being exactly what the world expects a man to be.

kq-c-z-lemlirg-j-ckrg.jpeg

I feel personally that in today’s society there appears men that are somewhat forced not to show emotion they may fear that in doing so it can break their Man-Character. I’ve seen it in friends, I’ve seen it in movies and in our current society.

Overall a man that is expressing their hearts and true being. Because of societies old-fashioned social behaviour This can be a fear for many men feeling that will be making them “Less of a man”.

With expressing comes different outcomes. When people are happy they express it through the act of laughing, when people are annoyed they may express this through frowning.

We don’t always choose to express laughter when something is appearing as being funny but when people are really devastated and upset they will sometimes express this through the act of crying. For men most feel as if they need to restrain oneself from the act of crying as it can be perceived as not being strong or “Being a man”.

I want to produce this Project to show my points and get an understanding through the response that it will receive also reaction from multiple audiences, for this reason I will be posting my project on different social Medias. For me it comes down to making a point and also spreading a message to people that men shouldn’t be afraid or ever worry about expressing emotions because to me? That is simply what being human means to me.

  • Director Research

Bill Viola

Bill Viola is a video installation artist he has been doing his work for 40 years. The work that he produces involves different environments, flat panel video pieces. He has also produced performance in operas and his work exhibited

In museums a good example is

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Bill Viola also includes also Spiritual Components, He includes elements of Islamic Sufism, Christian mysticism in his work. Bill viola likes to experiment with his works, producing immersive pieces that feel like his work is being watched through a microscope.

In his work Bill viola is a perfectionist. He likes to include a wide range of visuals. He may use fire or water. This can bring his work to real life as it mirrors the real environment.

As a child Bill viola was an introvert and preferred among others and found more joy and inspiration from the world around him.

Contextual Research

  • Historical Research

  • The First video ever made and what inspired it/ how your video relates.) The First Video ever produced is called the Roundhay Garden Scene. It is believed to the oldest surviving film in existence.

The earliest celluloid film was shot by Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince using the Le Prince single-lens camera made in 1888. It was taken in the garden of the Whitley family house in Oakwood Grange Road, Roundhay, a suburb of Leeds, Yorkshire, Great Britain,

Possibly on October 14, 1888. It shows Adolphe Le Prince (Le Prince's son), Mrs. Sarah Whitley, (Le Prince's mother-in-law), Joseph Whitley and Miss Harriet Hartley. The 'actors' are shown walking around in circles, laughing to themselves and keeping within the area framed by the camera. It lasts for less than 2 seconds and includes 4 frames.

I Believe videos can Inspire and can always tell a story. I use this to my advantage when investing in my own video projects as I am about to being the narrator. Not just in being the Camera Director aspect but also from the acting perspective.

  • Practical Research

  • (Editing research how did I learn to do my editing techniques during the pre-production of my FMP)

As a hobby, I like to do editing and have had many projects that I have produced on different editing platforms such as Sony Vegas, premiere pro and even music editing applications like audacity. Through my experience, I have learnt how to edit for various projects. If I want to edit a movie, I would know what transitions and scenes to cut into and the same goes for music videos, etc. This has help me during the Post-Production of my Fmp Project I’ve understood what elements and learnt techniques that this Project will need to involve and have considered this just before the editing stage.

Broader Research

  • Gallery Research

(Contemporary images and how it inspired you on the visit in the work you have produced)

As a class, we visited a gallery contemporary, as you can see I have captured some images from our trip. I do not remember the video installation artist who produced the work but I really did enjoy the visit I thought that it was very memorable time and that what was being shown was immersive. I believe that the video we watched as a class during our time at the contemporary featured 3D sound this made it more expressive and real. I have been inspired by our visit here because I enjoyed the use of dark themes to create a mood or feeling. It is a reminder to me of how different colours can be used in a way that can create an ambience and a setting. In my piece, I has used text on my screen to serve as a narrative and Text had been used in the contemporary video that was shown to our class.

  • Target Audience Research and Primary Research

(Do a survey- print screen results and say how they have helped you plan your work)

During the whole Production of my Fmp Project, I conducted a survey using the website – Survey Monkey. In the survey, I included Questions about male expectations and societal views. I did this as part of my primary research and have gathered answers below

My survey link -https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/N9HLKH9?fbclid=IwAR0SRZerLf2n3MJNEjyjm7NeShxwGuuN3dLgVcLl4967SIt_pXY4eTWkgZk

With the answers that I received in my survey it has helped me to plan out my project and use it to my advantage when it comes to what issues are more of a problem today so therefore what should be highlighted more in the video. I felt that by conducting a survey I would receive a viral response from mainly Men who may be able to answer it more accurately as it could relate to them or what they may be facing themselves. Alongside my survey, I have had conversations with multiple peers about the subject and had received opinions and answers that have shaped my Fmp project.

  • Legal Research-  (Copyright when it comes to using music or collecting images online)

In my Fmp, I have used background music and sound effects and a few images.

This could serve as an issue as I may need a license to hold access and permissions to be able to use these in my projects this can even be the case for non-commercial projects

video-editor-991x519.jpg

Because of this I have uploaded my video to YouTube I have tried to include a small amount of owned material so that copyright holders won’t chase me down for using their content in my production.

What type of research did you do for this project (primary/secondary etc.)?

For My project i conducted Primary Research, i did this by creating an online survey on the website Survey Monkey. Using the data i was able to collect answers from different people who did the survey.

Which pieces of research were the most helpful and how did they help you (give examples)?

The most helpful research Included historical Research and also Gallery Research. With these two i was able to reach a deeper understand into what i was going to be making/producing. When looking at historical research, i found it helpful as i was learning the origins of video and seeing how i can narate my piece. With gallery research i was able to capture reasearch visually from visiting the contemporary as seeing the art in person.

Was there any research you did that wasn't as helpful, why wasn't helpful?

Personally i felt that practical research wasn't as important during conducting my research. i say this because i meantioned the sftwares that i use when it comes to the editing phase and i just felt like this type of reaserch felt irrelvent to my project.

I fe

How do you feel about your research file?

Looking at my entire Research file and considering all the work i've put into it i feel happy with what i've done. it's given a good look and clear Idea into what i am wanting to Produce for my Fmp.
